Dare to Change
April J. Lightsey, PhD
Licensed Psychologist
As a licensed psychologist, I have had the privilege of working with individuals from a wide range of cultural, social, and personal backgrounds. My clinical experience spans veterans navigating trauma, professionals balancing the demands of work and family, and individuals confronting anxiety, depression, and other common challenges of daily life. Across these diverse settings, my approach has remained consistent: to help people identify the values that matter most to them and use those values as a compass for meaningful action, even in the face of hardship.
I believe that lasting change is rooted not in perfection, but in courage—the willingness to live bravely and take small, intentional steps toward a life aligned with one’s deepest commitments. Whether in therapy sessions, group work, or educational settings, I emphasize practical strategies that empower people to move through fear, strengthen resilience, and create lives of purpose and connection. My mission is to equip both patients and fellow clinicians with tools that foster growth, healing, and authentic living.
Current projects:
-
Writing projects on Major Depressive Disorder and on the philosophical underpinnings of psychotherapy.
-
Developing educational materials and giving seminars to help everyday people overcome obstacles and live out their values and dreams.
-
Training and consulting with mental health clinicians in the areas of: MDD, trauma, anxiety disorders, and philosophical issues.
-
Currently, I am not taking new psychotherapy patients. However, if you are a former patient, feel free to reconnect.

About Me
Serving Patients Since 2003
I’m Dr. April Lightsey, PhD, a licensed clinical psychologist offering psychological services to patients in Colorado and (via telehealth) in Virginia.

Although I saw my first patients in 2003 as a graduate student at the University of New Mexico, it wasn't until I was working with soldiers at Fort Campbell, KY in 2012 that I began specializing in patients with PTSD or other trauma-related problems. I also began developing expertise in working with patients with anxiety, chronic pain, and suicidal thoughts during this time. Since then, I have worked in a variety of settings, including Army clinics, the Veterans administration, and private practice.

Teaching is a long-term passion of mine. Before I was a psychologist, I taught reading, writing, and mathematics to students with learning disabilities in a private clinic. I taught GED classes for Denver Public Schools for two years with at-risk students. I have since taught at the college level. As a military psychologist I taught short classes to commanders and soldiers to help them understand military regulations about mental health and to help them cope effectively in a military environment.

In 2024, I left private practice to begin research for some books that I am interested in writing. I continue to see former patients on an as needed basis. In addition, I am developing material to help patients and clinicians apply principles from scientific research to live their lives bravely and fully.
